Reading Is Good For You

Book Reviews, Literary News, and Thoughts on Life

Oh, publishers, what were you thinking?

I can name you any number of terrible examples of cover art in the Young Adult lit field (the genre is notorious for some extremely poor choices in design — the prom dress trend, anyone?), but I think this takes the cake. The eye make-up was over-done on the model on the hardcover, but this is just ridiculous. It makes the poor girl look demon-possessed. If that weren’t bad enough, her neck is strangely absent and her head looks much too big for her body. My biggest complaint, though, is that there is no indication whatsoever that this is a period novel. It’s completely generic and this girl wouldn’t look out of place walking down the street today.

I love, love, love Chime and, given the shortcomings of the hardcover, I was so hoping for a paperback cover that would help convince people that this is a book they need to read. There goes that idea.
